Having been diagnosed with dependent personality disorder and major depression, Susan Smith, at the age of 49, is currently incarcerated at the Leath Correctional Institution near Greenwood, South Carolina. According to her State Department of Corrections inmate records, she will be eligible for parole in November 2024.

In October 1994, Susan Leigh Smith of South Carolina strapped her boys into her car, drove it straight into John D. Long Lake, and then tried to blame it all on a Black man. Starting at a very early age, Susan Smith suffered unspeakable tragedy. Her father killed himself when she was just six years old, and she tried to follow suit at age 13.

For the unfamiliar, the murders for which Susan Smith was convicted took place in 1994, when she was 23. Not that it justifies a single thing, but her life wasn’t easy.

In July 1995, Smith was convicted of two counts of murder and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years, which is around the corner in November 2024.
